Although melasma is harmless, it can be persistent and may become more noticeable with sun exposure and hormonal changes. The good news is that appropriate treatment and consistent prevention can help reduce its appearance. 

In this blog, we’ll explain what melasma is, why it happens, and the most effective ways to treat and prevent it. 

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a chronic skin condition that causes flat, brown or greyish patches of pigmentation to develop, usually on sun-exposed areas of the face. It occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin (skin pigment), become overactive and produce excess pigment in certain areas.

Unlike a simple sunspot or freckle, melasma tends to appear in larger, symmetrical patches rather than small isolated spots. It’s far more common in women than men, and it often shows up during pregnancy, which is why it’s sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy” or chloasma.

While melasma isn’t harmful or painful, it can affect confidence and self-esteem, which is why so many people search for ways to reduce dark patches on skin and restore a clearer complexion.

What Are the Types of Melasma? 

Understanding the type of melasma you have helps determine which treatment will work best. Dermatologists generally classify melasma into three main types based on how deep the pigment sits in the skin:

What Causes Melasma?

Sun exposure is one of the most important triggers of melasma. Ultraviolet radiation stimulates melanin production, which can make existing pigmentation darker and contribute to recurrence. Visible light can also worsen melasma, particularly in people with darker skin tones.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal changes can stimulate melanin production. Pregnancy is a common trigger, while hormonal contraceptives and hormone-related changes may also contribute in some people.

Genetics

How to Get Rid of Melasma

There isn’t a single treatment that permanently removes melasma for everyone. Treatment depends on the type and severity of pigmentation, your skin type, previous treatments, and possible triggers.

A dermatologist may recommend one or a combination of the following:

  1. Topical Treatments


Topical treatments are often an important part of melasma management. Depending on your condition, a dermatologist may recommend ingredients such as hydroquinone, tretinoin, azelaic acid, or other pigment-reducing agents. Some skincare products may also contain ingredients such as vitamin C or kojic acid. 

  1. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels use controlled exfoliation to help reduce superficial pigmentation and improve skin tone. Depending on your skin type and pigmentation, a dermatologist may consider peels containing ingredients such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Because irritation can worsen melasma or trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the type and strength of the peel should be carefully selected by a professional. 

  1. Laser and Light-Based Treatments

Laser and light-based procedures may be considered when topical treatments do not provide sufficient improvement.
Advanced treatments like Q-switched lasers, fractional lasers, and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) target excess pigment at deeper layers of skin.

Microneedling involves using fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin.  It may be considered as an additional treatment for melasma in selected patients, sometimes alongside topical treatments. Because procedures can cause irritation or post-inflammatory pigmentation, microneedling should be performed by a qualified professional after assessing the skin. 

5. Tranexamic Acid

Tranexamic acid may be used as a treatment option for melasma in selected patients. It may be prescribed in oral or topical forms depending on the individual’s condition.

Oral tranexamic acid is not suitable for everyone and can carry risks, including an increased risk of blood clots in susceptible individuals. A dermatologist should review your medical history, medications, and risk factors before considering this treatment. Never take tranexamic acid for melasma without medical supervision.

How to Prevent Melasma From Getting Worse 

Since melasma is highly sensitive to triggers, prevention plays as big a role as treatment. Here are some essential prevention steps:

  • Wear sunscreen daily:

    Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every single day, rain or shine, and reapply every 2-3 hours if you’re outdoors. Look for sunscreens with iron oxide, which also protect against visible light.

  • Wear protective clothing:

    Hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas add an extra layer of defense against UV exposure.

  • Avoid excess heat exposure:

    Try to limit long periods in direct heat, such as cooking over open flames or prolonged sauna sessions.

  • Be cautious with hormonal treatments:

    If you’re on birth control or hormone therapy and notice pigmentation, consult your doctor about alternatives.

  • Stick to a gentle skincare routine:

    Avoid harsh scrubs or irritating products that can trigger inflammation and worsen pigmentation.

  • Be consistent with maintenance treatments:

    Even after your melasma has faded, continuing with a maintenance skincare routine helps prevent recurrence.
